Carlton may have lost to an on-song Port Adelaide last week, but the match did give Blues fans another glimpse of the Club’s up-and-comers.
It was the youngest side Carlton has fielded this year, with Nick Holman making his debut while Ciaran Sheehan and Blaine Johnson came in for their third and fifth game respectively.
Speaking to SEN on Saturday, defender Michael Jamison said he took a lot out of the loss, indicating that it was good to see what some of the younger Carlton players can do at the top level.
“We got some games into some kids,” Jamison said.
“From half-time, we made a real concerted effort to keep looking after each other, keep directing the young guys, and that went through for the entire game so that was a pleasing thing to take out of it.”
Another positive was the continued development of ruckman Cameron Wood.
Coming up against one of the most improved big men in the league, Matthew Lobbe, Wood had a greater impact around the ground. He worked hard for his 16 disposals and was untiring at the stoppages.
Sam Rowe was valiant down back, limiting Coleman Medal contender Jay Schulz to two goals while also providing a rebounding option coming out of defence.
Jamison suggested that the main weaknesses stemmed from basic skill errors.
“This was more to do with execution and composure and silly turnovers … I think that shows a little bit of growth,” he said.
“I thought we were still really vocal on the ground and still trying to turn things around, I think the game just got away from us early … even though it was a 100 point loss, I think we’ve had more deflating losses in the past.”
Carlton will face archrivals Essendon in the Blues’ final game of the 2014 season, and Jamison has emphasised the importance of having a good showing this weekend.
“We just want to make sure when we play Essendon this week that we don’t go into a pre-season with that sort of loss in the back of our minds,” Jamison said.
“We’ve made some pretty good ground over the past 6-8 weeks and that’s what we want to remember going into the pre-season – not a disappointing effort like (Friday) night.”
