Sunday’s match once again pits the competition’s historical heavyweights Carlton and Collingwood against eachother, with both teams vying for the Peter Mac Cup.
Currently the Bluebaggers are six wins to the good in the head to head stakes (125 wins to the Carringbush’s 119 with four draws thrown into the mix) in the 248 contests hard won and dear since 1897.
But win 126 won’t come easy, with Collingwood ranked second only to Sydney for average tackles per game and third in the comp for marks inside 50.
Notwithstanding Jamie Elliott’s habit of turning it on in these contests, Scott Pendlebury and Travis Cloke pose significant threats.
Pendlebury, not surprisingly, leads his team for disposals (3rd overall in the AFL) as well as its kicks/handballs stats. A genuine line-breaker, his true worth is measured in both contested and uncontested possession stats because he holds sway at the club in both.
With the Pies ranked third in the AFL for marks inside 50, you expect big Trav to be a chief contributor to this stat - and it holds up.
Cloke is ranked 3rd in the AFL here, and is also equal-fifth for contested marks. Significantly he’s also booted 18.5 in the past four matches.
If Pendlebury’s and Cloke’s influences can be curbed come Sunday, then Mick’s men will go some way to securing a timely win.
