A beaming Mick Malthouse has told Carlton faithful it’s a “better Monday morning” after his team’s 85-point win over St Kilda.

In his weekly message to Carlton members, Malthouse thanked those who have stood by the team and urged them to enjoy the win.

“The boys were fantastic and it’s great for a lot of people,” Malthouse said.

“It’s great for our reserves side who had a terrific win against Collingwood (and) it’s great for our senior players who did very well against the Saints.

“I, along with all our players, are rapt for our supporters that have stuck so valiantly to the task of supporting us.”

After taking the lead early at Etihad Stadium yesterday, the Blues were tested by a flurry of goals from the Saints in the second term.

At halftime the Carlton coach challenged his men to rise to the occasion, and Malthouse says they did just that.  

“I was particularly rapt with the way we responded after half time, and I thought the leadership qualities of Marc Murphy shone out,” Malthouse said.

The win has elevated Carlton to 13th on the ladder, on equal points with the 12th-placed Tigers. Meanwhile, the Northern Blues are into the top eight in the VFL after an 18-win over Collingwood at Preston City Oval.

Malthouse was pleased with the performance of several Blues who ran out in the reserves, saying the likes of Jarrad Waite, Matthew Watson, Jeff Garlett, Patrick Cripps and Jaryd Cachia have all pressed their case for senior selection.

Carlton will face a massive assignment this week, travelling north to play ladder-leaders Sydney at the SCG.

Malthouse expects it will be a tough game, but he has welcomed the challenge.

“We know we’re in for a big game, but on the back of the confidence we got from yesterday we’re looking forward to it,” he said.
