JACOB Weitering’s exemplary start to the season was reflected in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year votes.
For the second straight game, Weitering featured in the votes after completing a virtual shutout of his direct opponent.
After rendering Tom Lynch goalless in Round 1, Weitering didn’t concede a score to Tom McDonald on the weekend — the player who kicked six goals in three quarters against Carlton in 2019.
It marked the third straight game Weitering hasn't conceded a goal, including the final round of 2019 against Tom Hawkins: his likely opponent this weekend in the trip to the Cattery.
Weitering was dominant in the air opposed to McDonald: he has lost just three of his 18 one-on-one contests in the season’s first two games.
The emerging defender added six votes to the three he registered in Round 1.
He wasn’t alone, with fellow defender Sam Docherty also polling two votes.
The co-captain continued with his strong return to football, collecting 24 disposals (at 83 per cent efficiency) and seven rebound 50s. It was Docherty’s first lot of AFLCA votes since winning the David Parkin Medal in Round 22, 2017.\
