CARLTON’S youngsters were put through their paces in a scratch match against Melbourne’s reserves at Ikon Park on Saturday.
Taking place in three 20-minute time periods, the structure of the game saw all 14 of Carlton’s players on the field for the entirety of the game. With 17 available players, Melbourne rotated three players on the bench.
As Senior Coach David Teague mooted earlier in the week, it was a chance for players to put their hands up and gain valuable match fitness where they otherwise wouldn’t.
Draftee Sam Philp impressed over the course of the afternoon, rotating his role between the forward line and midfield. He provided two assists for Matthew Owies - who kicked three goals - and Ben Silvagni, while using his pace to his advantage.
Fellow first-year Blue Josh Honey showed promising signs in a similar position to Philp, while Fraser Phillips kicked two classy goals in the opening time period.
Lochie O’Brien and Tom Williamson had strong moments utilising their run and carry, while Callum Moore battled manfully as he assumed ruck duties.
The game was umpired by Carlton Head of Development Luke Power, and former Blue-turned-Melbourne official Jim Plunkett.
GOALS: Owies 3, Phillips 2, Philp, Silvagni
