CARLTON midfielder Andrew Carrazzo says the Blues need a competitive performance against Sydney at Etihad Stadium next Sunday or they risk dropping out of the top eight.

Having suffered an 11-goal thumping at the hands of the Western Bulldogs in the final game of round 15, Carlton has slipped to seventh on the ladder, one place behind the Swans.

“If we don’t lift ourselves up we’re going to struggle to make the finals,” Carrazzo said.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten has promised to put his players through a torrid week on the training track in preparation for their clash with the Swans.

But while their season looks to be slipping away, Carrazzo still believes the Blues can recover.

“If we can make some adjustments now, with seven games to go, we’re a real chance [to finish in the top eight],” he said.

With the opportunity to keep pace with the top four at stake, the Blues certainly picked a bad week to produce one of their worst performances of the season.

Their effort against the Bulldogs was summed up by an incident that came 22 minutes into the last quarter.

After Daniel Giansiracusa booted the ball into attack for the Dogs, Carlton defenders Dennis Armfield and Bret Thornton spoiled each other, which allowed Shaun Higgins to grab the ball and stroll into an open goal.

“We’re pretty gutted,” Carrazzo said after the final siren.

“It was a big night for the team and the club and we didn’t respond at all.

“When we’ve been confronted during the last month we’ve struggled to find the fight to resist those teams that are taking it up to us.

“They obviously pressed us pretty hard, but a lot of those skill errors were in uncontested situations.

“We probably had 50 bad errors that really cost us.

“Having said that, when we lose the ball we need to find a way to win it back and we didn’t do that well enough either.”
