ADDING to Carlton history.

With Madison Prespakis’ AFLW Best and Fairest triumph last night, the teenager matched a feat only accomplished once in Carlton’s 156-year history.

Following on from Geoff Southby’s achievements in 1971 and 1972, Prespakis became just the second Blue to win consecutive best-and-fairest awards in their first two seasons.

Unaware of the enormity of the feat she had just achieved, Prespakis - who was crowned in a digital vote count on Thursday - said “it hasn’t really sunk in just yet”.

“That’s pretty cool. To be able to not make history, but add to it is pretty awesome,” Prespakis said.

“To know that my name will be on that list, at such a great club, is even better.

“It’s pretty cool to see that and to be an AFLW player to add to that list is awesome. It’s awesome.”

Prespakis polled in every game during the vote count, finishing in the top two in six of the seven games.

As a two-time Carlton best and fairest winner, the 2019 NAB AFL Rising Star and the vice-captain of the 22under22 team among others, it’s clear that awards season is constantly kind to the midfield gun.

However, there’s one thing above all else which Prespakis wants to achieve.

“It’s really nice to get individual accolades for your hard work, but nothing really can defeat the biggest goal we go for as a team, and that’s a premiership,” she said.

“The girls are hungry for it and it’d be incredible to win a Grand Final, especially in AFLW, and to put more silverware in the Carlton Football Club.

“Everyone loves being at the Club and I know everyone wants to stay together and win that flag that we’re all talking about. That’s what drives us.”

Perhaps the most positive thing to come from last night which lends itself to future success was a closer look at the vote count.

Joining Prespakis in the top five were Georgia Gee, Grace Egan and Lucy McEvoy: the four players are aged 20 or under. Runner-up Chloe Dalton is also in just her second season of football.

She said the progression of the emerging Game Changers would go from strength-to-strength in coming years.

“I was thinking about that last night: it’s pretty incredible to think that they’re all 20 and under,” she said.

“I was rapt when my ‘Velcro’ buddy [Georgia Gee] got third place last night. I was so happy for her.

“I was really happy for the other girls, Grace and Lucy in their first years. They’ve all worked so hard to get where they are today and I think that’s the special thing about our group.

“We’ve got such a young group, but we’ve got such a mature group as well.

“Everyone speaks about how good our young age crop is but I think our foundation players and leaders really set the tone.”
