Second-year defender Charlotte Wilson has become Carlton’s third NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star nominee in the 2020 season.

Wilson was a stalwart down back for the Blues in their 21-point win against St Kilda in the third annual AFLW Carlton Respects game on Saturday night, gathering 12 possessions to go along with her eight marks.

The 19-year-old also had a standout game against Adelaide in Round 4, collecting a career-high 19 disposals and taking nine marks.

In just her first year in the AFL Women’s competition, Wilson played in the 2019 Grand Final against Adelaide, holding her own in front of over 53,000 fans at Adelaide Oval.

Wilson has improved her game in a big way this season, going from averaging four disposals per game in 2019 to 12 in 2020.

This is the first time in the competition’s history that Carlton has had three Rising Star nominations in one season, with Wilson joining midfielders Lucy McEvoy (Round 1) and Grace Egan (Round 4) in being eligible for the main award.

Carlton Senior Coach Daniel Harford praised Wilson’s continual improvement since arriving at the Club last year.

“Charlotte plays in line with our team's growth mindset and has been working diligently behind the scenes to get the best out of herself each game,” Harford said.

“Not only is she a ripper player, but she is also a great human being.

“She is almost 10 games into her AFLW career and she’s growing every single week, having worked alongside the likes of 2019 All-Australian duo Kerryn Harrington and Gab Pound in defence.

“Charlotte’s played in some big moments like last year’s Grand Final and understands pressure situations a bit better now, which will hopefully hold her in good stead to keep improving over a long career in Navy Blue.”

Two players are nominated for the AFLW Rising Star award each week of the AFL Women’s season. AFLW players aged 21-or-under as of January 1, 2020 are eligible for the award, provided they haven’t been previously nominated.
