Carlton coach John Barker believes the Dockers will be fired up and looking to make amends when they meet the Blues on Saturday, after a disappointing 72-point loss to the reigning premiers Hawthorn last week.

“I don’t think he’s (Lyon) a massive fan of losing in the matter which they lost and that means there’s going to be a sharper focus in their camp,” Barker told Perth radio station 6PR on Thursday night.

Barker says the message to his young Blues has been to “use our numbers around the ball” and “play the game that’s in front of us” in order to take advantage of Domain Stadium’s larger field.

“Subiaco is a ground that is big and it is long, but it’s actually narrow so it’s a bit easier to defend that full ground ball movement.

“We know Fremantle are a very good defensive team and they’ll be working hard to restrict us I’m sure,” Barker said.

Carlton will be without vice-captain Bryce Gibbs and Dennis Armfield, but the Blues regain experienced defender Sam Rowe and Sam Docherty, while 18-year old Western Australian Brad Wash will make his debut for Carlton, fittingly in his hometown.

The young midfielder will be the tenth player to pull on the Carlton jumper for the first time this year.

After Fremantle’s 12-goal loss to Hawthorn, Docker’s coach Ross Lyon has made five changes to his squad and is considering moving small forward Hayden Ballantyne into the midfield.

“We might throw him on the ball and free him up a little bit,” Lyon told 6PR during the week.

Meanwhile, Freo’s big-man Aaron Sandilands says while the Dockers must reflect on the Hawthorn game, their focus is now firmly on the Blues.

“Carlton has won two of its past four matches after winning just one game in the first half of the year,” he said.

“They’ve been up-and-about the last three or four weeks.

“There is no easy game in footy.”

The last time Carlton played Fremantle at Domain Stadium, in Round 19 last year, the Blues narrowly lost by five points.

"But as Mick (Malthouse) said, when you get a new coach and a replacement, that's human nature. It's about what happens over a long term that is the real measure."
