If there is one certainty about the Brownlow Medal it is that the favourite does not always win.

The award is voted by the umpires and as such it is different to the many media awards and to the club awards. The umpires see the game from a different perspective than the media box or the coach’s box. The unpredictability is what adds to the excitement of Brownlow night.

This year Carlton has two of the favourites for the prestigious award; Chris Judd and Marc Murphy. Judd has the been the hot favourite to take home his third Brownlow Medal for most the 2011 season and he would not only be a deserving winner but also a very popular one.

As we witnessed last year when Dane Swan was the hot favourite, the umpires do not always agree with the majority of the media in terms of who is the fairest and best for a season.

Marc Murphy is another who has won some media awards and was also leading the AFL Coaches Association Award late in the season. Another one of the favourites, a win by Murphy would certainly not surprise and would be just reward for a wonderful season and further highlight the development in his game.

The Blues go into tonight’s count with two of the favourites. Will we have another winner in 2011 or will Judd and Murphy take votes off each other? Or just maybe the two Carlton stars will share the medal. Now that is the perfect result for Carlton supporters.
