Have you ever heard of Lyme disease?

It is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted when bitten by a tick. It attacks all areas of the body and can cause seizures, headaches, blurry vision and numbness.

Lyme disease affects around 1,200 Australians and at this stage there is no proven cure.

One sufferer is Amy O’Sullivan, the niece of former Carlton player Luke O’Sullivan.

Luke played 62 games for the Blues between 1988 and 1997. His older brother Brendan also had an affiliation with the club, playing reserve grade for Carlton between 1978 and 1980 – he later went on to become a runner for the senior team.

With limited medication in Australia, this young woman has travelled to Germany so she can receive lifesaving treatment. The costs are huge so her family and friends are trying to raise as much money as possible. They have so far managed to raise $53,086 – a third of their target as they are aiming to raise $150,000.

Just recently, Hawthorn legend Peter Knight made his daughter’s fight with Lyme disease public, to create awareness about this relatively unknown illness. They have also travelled to Germany so that she can receive specialised treatment.

If you’d like to help, the next fundraising event for Amy O’Sullivan is a movie screening on Thursday 4 June. Tickets are $30, which includes a wristband and pre-drink with all proceeds going towards Amy’s fight.
