Carlton coach John Barker says his team showed endeavour in Round 16 against the Dockers.
It was always going to be a tough challenge – facing a premiership contender on their home deck – but in his weekly message to Carlton members, Barker said it was an “outstanding opportunity” for his young Blues.
“We had 11 guys who had played less than 50 games…so it’s a really good learning experience for them,” Barker said.
One of those players was 18-year-old Western Australian Brad Walsh, who made his AFL debut. He started as sub and stepped out onto the field for the first time in the final quarter.
“It was a tough quarter to come into as a debutant, but he rolled the sleeves up and he gave the type of endeavor we’re after," Barker said.
Turning his focus to Friday night’s game against the reigning premier Hawthorn, Barker fully understands the Blues will have their “work cut out” this weekend.
“It is a short turnover in to the Hawthorn game and obviously they’re playing some really good footy at the moment.
“We know it’s going to be a rather large task, but all we can ask for is strong endeavour and we’ll go in with what we see as a solid plan,” Barker said.
Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy will play his 200th AFL game this Friday night and Barker says the captain has really “dug in” and played a key role in lifting the standards at the Blues.
“Marc Murphy has been a great servant of the Carlton Football Club, he’s a great footballer and since I’ve taken over he’s been one of the shining lights – his form has really taken off.
“I wish nothing more than the best for him for Friday night in his 200th game.”
