Carlton players hopped on the team bus this morning to make their way to Maryborough, as the first day of their 2016 Australia Post Community Camp kicked off.
The players visited local schools and organisations, as well as taking skills sessions with the Maryborough women’s team and Auskick kids.
The first stop on Wednesday morning was the Maryborough railway station, where the players met the Mayor of Central Goldfields Shire and had lunch with members of the community.
With plenty of Blues supporters in the room, Councillor Paula Nixon couldn’t help belting out a rendition of our iconic theme song – and it didn’t take long for the players to join in!
After lunch, two Carlton youngsters, Jack Silvagni and Harry McKay, paid a visit to the Maryborough Education Centre.
The boys took part in a question-and-answer session, as well as having a kick with the kids.
“This is the first community camp I’ve been on,” McKay said.
“It’s been really good so far, the kids are awesome – I’m enjoying my time in Maryborough, everyone is so friendly and welcoming.”
Silvagni, who played his first game in navy blue on Sunday, says community camps are a great way to give back to the community.
“As AFL footballers we’ve got extra responsibilities to represent our club in rural communities,” Silvagni said.
“We’re visiting local schools, hospitals and aged care facilities, so I think it’s really good we get this opportunity.
“I’m looking forward to the activities tonight and taking the kids for kicking and handballing drills.”
The players will stay in Maryborough on Wednesday night before heading to Castlemaine and Kyneton for the second day of their community camp.
