Carlton has thrown its support behind the 2014 AusPost Multicultural School Program – a six-week school based program to assist migrant, refugee and newly arrived communities.
The program is aimed at helping those new to the community learn about AFL, while assisting with their transition into Australian society.
The schools involved in the program are Carlton Primary School, Carlton Gardens Primary School, Antonine College, St Luke's Primary School, Holy Name Primary School, Australian International Academy, St Clare's Primary School, Epping Views, Lalor North Primary School and Lalor East Primary School.
In addition to clinics, students will be given the opportunity to participate in a regional Multicultural Schools Cup later this year.
Carlton's Fan Development and Diversity Coordinator, Ned Murphy, says the program reinforces the positive impact Australian Rules can have on people's lives.
"We place a huge importance on the themes of the program – teamwork, respect, leadership, harmony and fair play," Murphy said.
"Football is a fantastic way to help the participants understand how positive behaviour and healthy living can be extremely beneficial in their everyday lives."
It's hoped the program will further develop social, physical, nutritional and educational outcomes in the community, as well as provide equal opportunities for all to access Australian football – whether that be as a fan, player, coach, administrator or umpire.
