Indonesian students embrace all things Navy Blue
The staff and students from Maria Bintang Laut School in Indonesia are amongst some of the most passionate Carlton supporters in the world.
A football clinic was recently organized for the students as part of a visit from their Australian sister school, Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School (OLHC).
Over the past 3 years, the Carlton Football Club has delivered the AFL’s Multicultural Schools Program to the students of OLHC. This program has looked to use Australian Rules Football as a vehicle to improve social, nutritional, physical and educational outcomes. After witnessing the benefits of the program for their own students, a number of teachers from OLHC found it necessary to share this experience with the students of their sister school in Bandung, Indonesia.
OLHC teacher Linda Oxley explains the intricacies of the Sherrin to a group of students
The clinic with the children was the highlight of the trip as the teachers tried to help students control “the ball that can bounce any way”. Teachers and students were given Carlton Football Club Caps and a number balls to help them practice their skills.
OLHC teacher Linda Oxley described the experience as one like no other in her career.
“It was the best professional development I had ever done, working through an interpreter in a different country and culture. The common ground was that the children love sport and it was great to see both boys and girls getting involved,” Mrs Oxley said.
Such is the love of AFL and Carlton at our Sister School in Bandung that even the Principal of Maria Bintang Laut School has the Carlton theme song as the ringtone on her phone… and she knows all the words!
