Last Saturday, a large group of students and staff from Kingswood College were invited to the Carlton v Melbourne game at the MCG to help celebrate the AFL’s Multicultural Round. More than 20 international students, mainly from China, were experiencing AFL for the first time.

Students were invited as guests of the Carlton Football Club as part of their ongoing commitment to developing the game in Melbourne’s international communities.

The students were amazed at how physical the game was and were captivated by the crowd’s involvement. A highlight for the students was the traditional Australian football experience of eating a meat pie with sauce at the half-time break on a cold Melbourne afternoon at the ‘G’.

"AFL is part of Melbourne's DNA, and taking our international students along to the Carlton match was a fantastic cultural experience for them and we are delighted to participate in Carlton's community activities," said Elisabeth Lenders, Principal of Kingswood College.

This initiative grew out of the Carlton Football Club’s involvement with the Chinese community in Box Hill as part of the Chinese New Year Celebrations earlier in 2012. The Club is also running a multicultural football clinic in July at Kingswood College as part of their community outreach program.

Yuta Kobayashi, Fan Development and Community Manager at the Carlton Football Club, said he was delighted with the response from the students at Kingswood College and is looking forward to growing the partnership, running the football clinic in July and seeing the College participate in the Multicultural Cup.
