HEATH Scotland says the club is still on track for a strong round one showing against Richmond despite not winning a game during the NAB Cup.

The Blues finished their winless pre-season with a 16-point loss to North Melbourne at Visy Park on Sunday.

They face the Tigers at the MCG in their traditional season opening clash on Thursday week.

"Ideally you'd like to win every game, and it hasn't panned out that way, but we're not too worried about the win-loss ratio," Scotland said on Monday.

"We've had a plan and it's been noted by the coaches publicly that we've … managed players through the pre-season, and we weren't really focused on the win-losses.

"That's all gone smoothly.

"We have lost a few players for round one, but it was all about getting the workload into players and making sure that goes well."

The 31-year-old said the Blues' strong finish against the Kangaroos - they booted six last quarter goals to three - showed the team was fit.

But he also noted areas for improvement.

"Probably from our pre-season form, our press needs a little bit more work," Scotland said.

"Getting our full side together is going to help that.

"But if we can reduce the opposition score a little bit more, we know we can score quite quickly.

"We're not far off it, it's just tidying a few little things up."

The Blues will be without senior players Andrew Walker, Michael Jamison, Nick Duigan, Robbie Warnock and Jeremy Laidler for round one.

Key defender Jamison's absence is of particular concern, with Kangaroos forward Drew Petrie booting seven goals in a best on ground display on Sunday.

Scotland said the key to preventing a similar performance from Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt in a fortnight would be to limit his supply.

"We've got to be stronger in the air, but we've got to support as a midfield as well," he said.

"We probably allowed North yesterday to just have too much easy access and get the ball in there under no pressure.

"That makes it hard for our backs.

"So that'll be a focus coming into Richmond, to make sure we put more pressure on the ball."
