CARLTON goalsneak Matthew Wright says the Blues are ready to respond on Saturday afternoon as they prepare to take on the second-placed Eagles at the MCG.
After a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos in Tasmania in Round 4, Wright told SEN Breakfast on Friday morning that the coaches and players reviewed the game “pretty heavily”, as they look to bounce back this week.
“We reviewed the game pretty heavily and addressed a few areas that we obviously need to improve in – we didn’t really hold back too much,” Wright said.
“Then we got on with the week and focused our energy towards the Eagles – it’s been a really good week on the track and we obviously need to come out and respond.”
With skipper Marc Murphy sidelined (plantar fascia), Matthew Kreuzer out with a groin injury and joint vice-captain Sam Docherty missing the season with a ruptured ACL, Wright acknowledged Carlton’s more experienced players will need to “step up” their on-field leadership.
“When you lose a couple of your leaders and they go out, you need others to step up,” Wright said.
“Myself and a few others need to lead the way for these younger players coming through and set the example.”
One of those experienced players is defender Sam Rowe, who throughout his rehab has continued to drive high standards at the Club.
After rupturing his ACL in Round 9 against Fremantle at Domain Stadium last season, the 30-year-old has worked hard to recover and makes his long-awaited return this week.
Wright couldn’t be happier he’ll be once against playing alongside ‘Rowey’.
“That’s an awesome story, he’s really one of footy’s good guys,” Wright said.
“For him to come in after missing a lot of footy with his knee is great.
“He’s been very diligent with his rehab and he’s come back and performed well in the VFL, so we’re excited he gets the opportunity this week – he’s one of the players I love running out with.”
Carlton takes on the West Coast Eagles this Saturday afternoon at the MCG, with the match kicking off at 4:35pm.
