STEPHEN Silvagni says it's possible but “highly unlikely” that Carlton would trade the No.1 pick in this year’s national draft.
With the NAB AFL Trade Period kicking off this morning, Silvagni told Macquarie Sports Radio that a deal involving the first pick would require something big.
However, as is the case every off-season, Silvagni said it was a case of ‘never say never’.
“With pick one, I think it’s only been traded once in the past so it’s a big decision if that was to occur,” Silvagni said.
“It’s highly unlikely, but having said that you just don’t know what may come across the table in the trade period.”
The Blues will once again look to bolster their young list with 16 players taken over the course of the last three national drafts.
Silvagni also stated that the Club was keen on adding talent in the 22- to 27-year-old age bracket.
“We obviously still want to go to the draft, we’ve participated in the last three drafts quite heavily,” Silvagni said.
“Having said that, we understand that if the right player is there to support our young list, we’d be interested. We’ve targeted some players to help out our youngsters.”
When quizzed about a potential deal for Adelaide’s Mitch McGovern, Silvagni said he couldn’t envisage Carlton’s first pick being involved.
However, he said dialogue was open with the Crows about a deal for the 23-year-old forward.
“We’re in discussions at the moment about Mitch … We haven’t spoken about the No. 1 pick,” Silvagni said.
“We’re a fair way down the track and we’re getting closer to a deal — that’s a start.”
