RELIEF and excitement — they were the two overriding emotions Mitch McGovern felt when he officially became a Blue.
McGovern was Carlton’s first acquisition of the off-season, securing his desired move to the Blues on the third day of the trade period.
The 24-year-old key forward burst onto the scene in 2016 with Adelaide, going on to kick 67 goals from 48 games.
Speaking at Ikon Park, McGovern said the chance to play a big role in the Club’s future was central behind his decision to join Carlton.
“We’ve got a lot of talent coming through, both talls and smalls — part of the decision I made was because of the list we have,” McGovern said.
“The prospects going forward were a big decision behind coming here.”
The former Crow said there were a number of other factors which contributed to his decision — namely, a previous coach of his as well as the home of football.
“A former coach of mine drew me across here, that being David Teague. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and the way he operates around a football club,” McGovern said.
“There was a go-home factor there, but playing in front of big crowds at the MCG, that’s why I’m here.
“I can’t wait to play in Round 1 in front of 90,000 people at the MCG - it’s something I’m really looking forward to. We’re a big-four side in the heart of Melbourne.”
After Carlton’s four acquisitions in the trade period, Blues supporters would have been quick to run through their 'best 22' heading into next season.
Looking ahead to 2019, McGovern said a three-pronged attack up forward was something he was enthusiastic about joining.
“To join Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay, it’s extremely exciting. I’m a bit worried about getting a kick with that forward line, with the tall timber up there,” McGovern said with a smile.
“With those two there, hopefully I can add another threat and together we can do some damage.”
It’s been a memorable off-season for McGovern, who sealed his move to Carlton after watching his brother star in a premiership victory for West Coast.
The younger McGovern said Jeremy’s success on Grand Final day provided even more motivation heading into a lengthy summer.
“Jeremy winning a premiership does spur me on,” McGovern said.
“It was a special moment for my family and Jeremy — to be there first-hand and see him win his first flag was amazing.
“I know we’re not where we want to be, but with the list going forward we can be up there in the next couple of years.”
Ready to settle into new surroundings alongside his new teammates, McGovern said the Club’s off-season was reason for excitement and optimism.
“There are very exciting times ahead, especially with the talent we brought in,” McGovern said.
“We all know what Alex Fasolo’s about and what he can deliver at his best, and also there’s the young talent which is untouched and knowing they can perform at the top level is awesome.”
