Carlton VFLW forward Courteney Bromage is thriving in the Blues’ culture and environment, as she strives for a spot on an AFLW list.

The Queensland native, Bromage has been playing for the VFLW Blues since the teams inception, and has quickly risen through the ranks.

While she still balances life between Queensland and Victoria, Bromage admits moving down south has given her a new perspective of where her football could take her.

“AFLW is definitely something that I have thought about,” Bromage said.

“I am striving for it at the moment so I guess we’ll see where that heads in the next couple of weeks or next couple of years, and we can go from there.”

Since making the move to Victoria, Bromage has noticed a massive difference in the pace of the game, as well as the level of support compared to that in Queensland.

Despite the distance from home, Bromage has settled in well to her new environment thanks to the help of her teammates and coaches.

“I’m pretty family orientated so it’s a bit hard to be away from my family because they’re all up in Queensland,” she said.

“I think I’m handling it well and the girls here are making it a lot easier to settle in as well.”

“We’ve built a really good bond. There’s different people from everywhere and we’ve come from all different backgrounds.

“I think we’ve got a really strong bond and it makes footy a lot more enjoyable.”

Bromage is known for her trademark helmet and braids, which she wears unconditionally to every game.

While the helmet came from a nasty injury during junior footy, she admits she’s unsure why she never fails to wear braids every game.

“When I was in Under 12s playing with the boys, I collided with one of my own teammates,” Bromage said.

“He did cop the worst of it but we both got a bit of a concussion and then I got another one after that.

“I sort of have to have the braids. If I don’t have the braids, I get in a bit of a mood. I don’t know where they came from.

“When my mum started braiding my little sister’s hair when she played sports and I just did the same thing and it stuck from there.”

Bromage has played every game for the Blues this season and has averaged 7.7 disposals and 4.3 tackles.
