NOT LEAVING too much for too few.
George Hewett said it was imperative for everyone at IKON Park to keep level-headed despite a disappointing start to the season, as it looks to accelerate its campaign against the Western Bulldogs on Friday night.
Arguably the Blues’ best last week against Hawthorn, Hewett said there were positives to take out of the 20-point defeat in Round 2, but was understanding of the frustrations surrounding the Blues’ 0-2 start to the year.
Hewett said the Blues would continue to go after the areas which let them down in an almighty tussle at the MCG, while also maximising the more promising signs that were shown throughout four quarters.
“The Hawks game was a great contest where they won the critical moments in their back half to transition and goal. Our skills let us down a little bit, that’s something we’ll get to work on,” Hewett told media on Monday morning.
“A big factor is confidence. They scored 80 points but we only scored 60, so it’s something to get to work on with our offence… footy can be a simple one, it’s our skills and being able to finish.
“Personally I don’t have much social media, but [the response] is fair. If any team is 0-2, you’re going to be disappointed. But there are 21 more games and it’s a long season - you look at teams like Brisbane last year and even the Hawks, there’s plenty of time to turn it around.”
For the first time in his career on the weekend, Hewett accumulated 15+ contested possessions, 10+ tackles and 10+ clearances, with the Blues right it in at the coalface against the Hawks on a wet night.
When it comes to that polish with ball in hand, Hewett said - as has always been the ethos under Michael Voss - that it was a group responsibility, and the Blues wouldn’t simply resort to their ‘bigger-name’ players to turn things around.
“I think we’ve got a pretty good balance [across the board], we just need to take our chances inside 50. We looked at the figures and things were in our favour except the scoreboard, which is the one that counts.
“It’d be nice to be 2-0, but this is where we’ve landed ourselves. We’re doing things right, but we need to be polished. We’ll be okay.
“[Friday night] is going to be exciting. The Dogs are playing really good footy, so it’s going to be a good challenge.”
