CARLTON has re-launched its 2024 Indigenous guernsey ahead of the AFLW Indigenous Rounds.

At the league’s Indigenous Round launch on Monday morning at Melbourne Museum, Carlton captain Kerryn Peterson expressed her team’s excitement about wearing the guernsey, fully embracing the round since its inception in 2021.

“It’s a round that the players are always really excited about,” Peterson said.

“Since 2021, we’ve had the Indigenous Round in the AFLW and to be able to wear a guernsey like what we’ve got on and have a different guernsey every year to celebrate a different culture.”

This year marks the first time that all four Carlton teams (including VFL and VFLW) will wear the same Indigenous guernsey, highlighting the connectedness between all the programs.

The guernsey designer - Stewart James - kept this in mind when creating the design, wanting to incorporate elements of Club history, weaving in elements from Wiradjuri culture and the totems of the three AFL Indigenous players on the list in 2024.

“The guernsey was designed by Stewart James, who is the cousin of Zac Williams in our men's program,” she said.

“The artwork is called ‘Ngiyanhi’, meaning ‘we all’.

“It speaks to the connection of all of our players at the Club, all four teams under the same umbrella and the connection that we as a Club really value.”

Honouring the trailblazing Indigenous athletes who have made a lasting impact - not just in AFL but across women's sports globally - Peterson takes pride in representing those who embody Indigenous culture.

The opportunity to learn more about Indigenous heritage and celebrate their achievements is a meaningful aspect of the upcoming rounds, which the players eagerly embrace and enjoy.

“It’s something for us and for me as an individual to be able to celebrate the Indigenous culture,” she said.

“We understand and are really proud of the contribution they’ve made to our Club and the broader AFL community.

“To be able to represent them, to educate and celebrate their culture something we really value and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

Carlton will wear their Indigenous guernsey in their Week 10 clash with Essendon at IKON Park. Due to a jumper clash, the Blues won't wear the guernsey in this weekend's game at Victoria Park against Collingwood.
