It was a year that will always be fondly remembered by Carlton faithful as the year we secured our 16th premiership cup.
The date was Saturday 30 September 1995 – Carlton v Geelong on football’s biggest stage.
Both sides had proven themselves in their respective preliminary finals: the Cats had thrashed the Tigers by 89 points, whilst the Blues had defeated the Kangaroos by 62 points.
Come Grand Final day it was expected to be a competitive contest – it turned out to be anything but.
Carlton supporter Marco Donnini recalls the anxiety he experienced that morning, but says it quickly subsided once play got underway.
“I think after kicking the first four goals of the game I was able to relax and it enjoy it a little bit,” Donnini said. “And I did.”
Whilst many moments during those four quarters instantly put a smile on Donnini’s face, it was a particular moment involving Greg Williams that stands out the most.
“It was Greg Williams’ goal – I think he was pulled to the ground, and he hit somebody’s hand off (before kicking a goal) and then he went and high-fived Sticks,” Donnini said.
The game was all over by half time. Carlton pulverised Geelong in those first two quarters, eventually going to on secure a 61-point victory. Meanwhile Greg Williams took out the Norm Smith Medal, after finishing with five goals and 31 possessions.
