Carlton big man Matthew Kreuzer is hopeful of returning from injury through the VFL this weekend.

It’s been a frustrating year for the 25-year-old, who hasn’t played since Round 1.

While he has effectively missed a season of football, Kreuzer says it was in his best interests to go under the knife to ensure his foot could fully heal.

“I broke it last year in the final then got through to the start of this year and it was still sort of broken ..  so I decided to go back in and get it re-operated on,” Kreuzer told radio RSN.

“They put a bone graft and a plate over the top, so I had that done … all the scans are showing it’s healed well so I’m looking forward to playing some footy now.”

Kreuzer has been back running for a number of weeks and says on the whole his body is feeling good.

The Northern Blues face Port Melbourne at Preston City Oval on Saturday and Kreuzer says he expects to be lining up – just not in the ruck.

“I’ve been doing a bit of work in the forward line the past couple of weeks so I will probably play forward when I get back,” Kreuzer said.

“But hopefully (I’ll) have a big pre-season and get then back in the ruck after that.”
