Subs worry for Judd
Chris Judd has player welfare worries about the new interchange rules
Speaking at a sponsorship breakfast on Tuesday, Judd admitted he had lingering concerns for players' welfare with the introduction of the new rule that sees the interchange bench reduced to three players with one substitute.
"I think it will make a big change," Judd said from the Hyundai season launch at Melbourne's Sofitel hotel on Tuesday.
While he said all teams had to deal with the rule change and none would derive any advantage from it, "the risk is [that] club's use that sub too early and then get some injuries and they may be tempted or forced to put injured players back out on the field.
"I think that would be a concern of everybody's, particularly to players [with regards] to concussion or something like that.
"You probably don't want to jump at shadows though. I think we'll suck it and see how it works."
The AFL is set to implement new regulations to safeguard the welfare of players who have been concussed, but Judd remained unconvinced.
"Sometimes the more rules that get brought in [the harder it becomes to police] … you'll just never get anyone [officially] concussed any more," he said.
"We'll wait and see how it pans out.
"I think certainly the aerobic requirements of the players, having that one less player rotating off the bench, is going to go through the roof."
Thursday's blockbuster at the MCG will mark the start of a crucial season for Carlton, which has lost two elimination finals in the past two years.
Judd said his players were champing at the bit to put the work done over a gruelling pre-season into practice on the field.
"The group's ready and I think the whole footballing public is really keen to start watching some footy and hearing less about some of football's extra-curricular activities," he said.
"We're very lucky [to have the facilities we do] and I think one of the things that that does do is it just takes away an excuse for the players not to perform. We don't have any excuses left and hopefully that shows up this season."
Major sponsor Hyundai and the Blues handed over a cheque for $100,000 to the Children's Cancer Centre Foundation during the launch.
