YOU MAY have seen Nic Newman, from time to time, be called ‘Noodle’ by teammates and on Carlton’s social media channels.
Now, he’s finally revealed why.
We love a nickname origin story, and this one begins in Newman’s time at the Sydney Swans.
Speaking to Triple M Rush Hour, Newman said that it was a name he wanted to get rid of once he made the move to become a Blue — but, like most nicknames, the more you’re keen to get rid of it, the more likely it is to stay.
Newman’s story is as follows, verbatim.
“I was a bit peckish, and I was at a bar — we went to a restaurant that turns into a nightclub. By the time we got there at 9pm, I thought the kitchen might still be open and I was hoping for some tucker . . . but it was shut,” Newman said.
“They said ‘we’ve got some two-minute noodles’ and I said ‘yep, that’ll do’. So I was at the bar eating two-minute noodles, and one of the boys took a snap.
“I tried to get rid of it, but it has stuck. It started up at Sydney, made its way to the Blues and once a few got hold of it, it was gone.”
Unlucky, Noodle.
