WHEN speaking to Channel 7 after his first Carlton win, Ollie Hollands spoke of what his first intention was when arriving at his boyhood club.

Earn respect, earn trust. From teammates and coaches alike.

Two comments about that final-quarter act, from his co-vice captain and one of the greatest leaders in the history of the game, said it all.

“I tell you what, that’s something I want to play with,” Jacob Weitering said post-match when talking to FOX Footy.

“That is the best way to earn respect from your teammates” was the call from Luke Hodge on Channel Seven.

For the humble Hollands, he regarded it simply as getting his job done for the team.

Of course, the act in question was his back-with-the-flight spoil in front of a marauding Jeremy Cameron, when the Round 2 contest was well and truly on the line.

“I knew I just had to go,” Hollands said.

“It’s all about playing my role. There might be times I find a bit of the footy and times I won’t — it’s about me getting my role done.

“I try and put my body on the line and on that occasion, it was nice to get there and get a fist in.”

Hollands didn’t want to be drawn in on the significance of the moment, instead wanting to heap praise on the likes of Lewis Young and Harry McKay in the final minutes of the game.

What resulted was Hollands’ first win for Carlton — and the age-old adage rang true.

“It’s been a pretty hectic couple of weeks — but how good is footy?

“It’s really special to be out here.

“To be able to come away with a win . . . I’m absolutely loving it, I couldn’t be happier.”
