As the 150th anniversary of the Carlton Football Club approaches, a friend of the club who preferred to remain nameless has done his bit for the cause.

The man dropped by Visy Park to hand over a unique collection of coins, each representing a landmark season in Carlton’s history - from a British halfpenny cast in the club’s foundation year of 1864, through to pennies from the VFA Premiership years of 1877 and ’87 and pre-decimal and post-decimal currency for all but one of the subsequent VFL/AFL premiership seasons including the hat-trick years of 1906, ’07 and ’08.

“These coins originally came from a friend who was a Carlton supporter,” the man said. “He’d collected these coins over a period of time.

“The early coins carry images of Queen Victoria through her 63-year reign, her son and heir Edward VII and grandson George V. These coins cover 148 years of Carlton’s history. Curiously, the original owner didn’t have a coin for the premiership year of 1995, but I’m sure that if you dig deep into your pocket you’ll find one.”

The man resolved to hand the coins over because he felt it was of more importance to the club and that the club would find a place for the collection.
