CARLTON skipper Marc Murphy says he and his teammates have begun a searching week following their loss to Brisbane at The Gabba on Saturday.
After an encouraging first term, the Blues conceded 15 goals after quarter-time to ultimately lose by 65 points, with injuries to Andrew Phillips (hamstring), Caleb Marchbank (raised heartbeat) and Jacob Weitering (calf) compounding the defeat.
“Certainly, as captain and players we understand our responsibility and it wasn’t good enough,” Murphy told media on Monday morning.
“On the weekend we obviously set ourselves to win that game. We had been playing some good footy the previous few weeks."
The 30-year-old midfielder, who has recommitted to Carlton for the next two seasons, said he sympathised with the Blues faithful.
“It is really disappointing when effort gets questioned. We started off really well, but we just didn’t nail the scoreboard as well as what we would have liked,” he said.
“The second and third quarters were really disappointing. I understand that our fans are really flat with that.”
Murphy, who has played two consecutive games since returning from an injured plantar fascia, promised a strong response from the Blues when they face St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
“We will make sure that over the next three or four weeks we don’t have any poor performances because the previous couple of weeks (prior to Brisbane game) we have shown some good signs without getting any wins,” he said.
“I just want to see a hungry team for four quarters and we will train that really hard this week.
“We will take the opportunities that we get to do that. We’ve got an opportunity on Friday night to respond.”
