ANALYSING a need, and picking accordingly.

Carlton's list management team capped off a busy few nights at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday, officially welcoming Lachie Cowan, Jaxon Binns and Harry Lemmey to IKON Park.

At the end of a night which had it all, including a live trade with the old enemy to snap up Cowan, Head of List Management Nick Austin spoke to media about the Blues' selections on night two.

On the live trade with Collingwood: "We made it pretty clear early on that we were keen to get in between our first and second pick. It became real when Collingwood finished their first pick: we thought we might be a chance, and we got the call. We were able to call it through for Lachie."

On Lachie Cowan's acquisition: "It’s his appetite for the contest. He’s a fantastic athlete, a metres-gained player with his overlap run and long kick, we love the way he plays and his attitude. He’s a team-first player that has had leadership roles and we love his aggression. He’s a natural footballer."

On Jaxon Binns being drafted, alongside Ollie Hollands: "We really want to improve our running capacity as a group. With Blake [Acres] in the trade period and [Ollie Hollands] and Jaxon, even Lachie, we’ve got some guys that can run... To add three guys that can cover the ground and play different roles in and around the square, we're really comfortable with the mix."

On Harry Lemmey being selected with pick No.47: "He’s 202cm. He’s had an up-and-down season consistency-wise: he’s played for a lot of sides and had some health issues with Covid earlier in the year. It was a disjointed season, but he’s a great athlete and a beautiful mover.

"To have someone develop under Harry and Charlie, we haven’t had that one as a pure key. It’s exciting to park one there and see how he develops. There’s also the ability for him to go back, that’s appealing to us. We like him in the front half, but the ability to swing gives him a bit of versatility."

On Lemmey's development: "Going into the season, he was quite high on our board. We tracked him really closely and as he started to slip, it became clear that we could get him later on in the draft — that’s how it played out.

"He’s someone we watched a lot of last year. He had an indifferent season with some things out of his control, but we’re really happy to bring him in and have him get to work."
