“I HOPE I can knuckle down and play a few more this season.”
After an impressive debut performance, we don’t think this will be the last we’ll see of Keeley Skepper.
The 18-year-old looked comfortable at the elite level, finishing with 14 disposals, four marks and a team-high 289 metres gained.
But for the Wodonga product, it was just a thrill to be out there.
“It was great to be out there with the team and amazing just to get that experience,” Skepper said post-match.
“The game runs more smoothly but it's just good to be out there. Everyone is so highly skilled and know what they're doing, so it's good to have the support from all of them around me.”
Playing predominantly across half-forward, Skepper contributed an equal team-high four score involvements and in a special moment, also booted a goal of her own in the third quarter.
“It actually felt pretty cool.
“I wasn't expecting to get it and I don't think I was meant to get it: I’m not sure it was meant for me but I'll take it.
“I just thought go back – I don’t really have a routine – so I just went back and did my thing.”
However, while up forward, Skepper was forced to watch on in the final moments as the game went down to the wire.
“It was pretty stressful because obviously I couldn't do much when it was just getting pumped out of the middle,” she said.
“Later in the quarter I just went right back into the backline so I was pretty deep – hopefully I did my job right.”
With a solid first-up effort from Skepper, her goals remain simple and team-focused.
“I just was to keep consistency at training and to keep high standards.
“Sometimes if you play well in your first game you can do nothing after that, so I want to try to stick to what I'm good at and maybe help all the other girls out as well because now I know what it's like to be out there so if anyone else makes a debut, I'm there to help and support them.”
