FOR AFL Senior Coach Michael Voss, no extra wager with his combatant - and former premiership teammate - Craig McRae needs to be added ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash, with plenty already on the line.
“We’re really excited by what’s going on around us and what it all means and what could happen on the back of it but at the same time, we’re really focused on what we need to do, and we need to put composure around it,” Voss said.
His attention has remained solely on instilling that sense of composure within the playing group, and honing focus on what can be controlled.
“There’s a lot of speculation and conversations that happen around you, but our job is to focus on the job at hand.
“We’ve been pretty focused on that throughout the week – what we can control, what we can’t control.”
And while there’s plenty at stake and external conversations have drifted to assessing his side’s season as a whole, Voss has remained focused on the task at hand.
“Coming into a game I don’t tend to think about what the next week looks like, I tend to focus on what we need to do to get the job done that week,” he said.
“Right throughout the season we’ve had plenty of things that we should be really pleased with in our progression but at the same time, we feel like we want to get better, and we’ve got to be able to find way to do that.
When speaking on improvement, Voss cited last week’s narrow loss to Melbourne as an important source of learning.
“The trick is that we’ve got 118 minutes of football where there’s plenty to celebrate, then there’s two minutes of football that leave you feeling disappointed,” he said.
“We have to lean more into the 118 minutes and some of the actions that we saw through that period of time but clearly, we’ve had to go to work on how we finish out those games.
“If it presents itself again, we’re all on the same page and we can get that job done if we need to.”
Most importantly, Voss believes his group are ready for Saturday.
“We’re pretty determined to see this thing through and we’re really excited about what’s coming up and all our energy is focused on that at the moment.”
