Following Charlie Curnow's re-signing and a virtual elimination final looming, Michael Voss spoke to the media about his group's task at hand.

Here's what he had to say ahead of Sunday afternoon's clash with Collingwood.

On Charlie Curnow’s re-signing:

“Talking to him yesterday when it was confirmed, what really stood out was the excitement that he had about the journey we’re on and he’s pretty determined to see it through with this group. They’re effectively a group that’s growing together and they’re pretty determined to stay together. It’s good to have it before the last round and hopefully it generates a little bit of momentum for us. It’s a great announcement today.

“It’s been a pretty interesting part of his career – there’s a part where we backed him in and now he’s backing us in and we’re grateful that he’s done that. He’s really invested in our group and pretty determined to stay here and see it through. It’s really pleasing for us.”

On the season as a whole:

“We’ve achieved a lot throughout the year and coming into a game I don’t tend to think about what the next week looks like, I tend to focus on what we need to do to get the job done that week. Right throughout the season we’ve had plenty of things that we should be really pleased with our progression but at the same time, we feel like we want to get better and we’ve got to be able to find way to do that.

"There will be ways that we’ll get better this week, and there will be ways that we’ll get better going forward. That doesn’t change our path but we’re pretty determined to see this thing through and we’re really excited about what’s coming up and all our energy is focused on that at the moment.”

On the Melbourne game:

“The trick is that we’ve got 118 minutes of football where there’s plenty to celebrate, then there’s two minutes of football that leave you feeling disappointed. We have to lean more into the 118 minutes and some of the actions that we saw through that period of time, but clearly we’ve had to go to work on how we finish out those games.

"If it presents itself again, we’re all on the same page and we can get that job done if we need to.”

On preparing the players for a big week:

“There’s a lot of speculation and conversations that happen around you, but our job is to focus on the job at hand. We’re really excited by what’s going on around us and what it all means and what could happen on the back of it but at the same time, we’re really focused on what we need to do and we need to put composure around it.

"We’ve been pretty focused on that throughout the week – what we can control, what we can’t control. Hopefully in those last couple of minutes, if we get to that particular stage, we’ll back ourselves in.”

On this week’s inclusions:

“If you look at the one that’s coming in with Zac Williams who’s had the longest layoff, he’s had a good month where he’s been out on the training track so he’s got all the loads in. The great thing about our modern environment is that we track them pretty closely and there’s not a metre missed in terms of how they prepare themselves.

"He’s fantastic in the way he’s gone about it – he’ll be a great inclusion for us. The other boys have missed a bit of footy but they’ve also had a fair bit under their belts so we feel confident in them.”

On the Collingwood-Carlton rivalry:

“There’s a greater history in terms of the Club but for us for this week it’s another opposition we have to work our way through. It’s another opposition that has plenty of threats and they’re going to try and prevent our style of football.

"The most important thing for us is making sure we can get our style up and going with the threats that they present. Beyond that, it really doesn’t mean much more. It’s a great rivalry and we embrace that rivalry like the last time we played them – we don’t step away from that, if anything, we lean into it.”

On George Hewett:

“He’s progressed well, he’s increased his training loads. It’s also how he pulls up so we’ve got to be mindful of that.

"We’ve still got some things that we need to get through today before we have our final confirmation.”
