IT MAY have been a good thing, at least in George Hewett’s case, that there were only five days of build-up for Carlton’s clash with Sydney.

As he prepared to come up against his old team for the first time, he admitted that the feeling of trepidation started immediately following the Blues’ Round 9 win against the Giants.

Not that his performance suggested anything of the sort.

Hewett continued his brilliant run of form ever since he arrived at Carlton, finishing the night with 32 disposals (No.2 on the ground), 17 contested possessions (No.1), nine clearances (No.1) and seven tackles (No.2).

Speaking to Channel 7’s Shaun Burgoyne post-match, he said he didn’t know what to expect coming up against a club and team he has so much admiration for.

“I remember after the Giants game on Sunday night, I was already a bit nervous for it,” Hewett said.

“I was a bit antsy and with a 7:50pm game, you’re waiting around all day — I didn’t know if I was going to cop it!

“They’re a tough side, Sydney. They have so much respect in the competition, so it was great to get the win against them.”

Hewett is in career-best form at his new club, but he believes it’s where he’s at off-field which is serving as the inspiration on it.

With partner Alice and young son Henry at home, Hewett has set about maximising his time while inside the four walls of the football club so he can relish time with family when he’s away.

“I think I have a good balance,” he said.

“When I’m at the Club, I try to get the best out of myself.

“I’ve got a young family, so I try and have more energy at home and not think about footy at all. Then you come into the Club and feel refreshed and ready to go.”
