IT'S BEEN a promising start to Michael Voss' Carlton coaching career, with his side continually making steps forward.
With six wins under the belt from eight games, what has impressed Voss the most is the playing group's accountability to keep learning and build every week on their performance, connection and standards.
Talking on AFL360 on Monday night, Voss noted he was pleased with the way that the Blues were turning up each game with the hunger to win.
“Certainly on the week-to-week scale, we’ve turned up with that effort and intensity,” Voss said.
“We have had a rollercoaster in games, we have been up and down where we’ve had the game on our terms and it’s been taken away, but showed great fortitude to be able to finish off games.”
The AFL Senior Coach has consistently stated that he wants his side to improve each week and be a better side at the end of the season compared to the start of it, with a better understanding of the team's system.
Voss said the fruits of the labour is beginning to pay off, with strong ownership of performance across the board. He said the ever-present is around consistency, both in-game and backing up each week.
“I feel like we’ve had little breakthrough moments where we’ve been able to bring that intensity and be able to execute our game style,” he said.
“We’ve not only brought our contest method, we’ve brought some of our system and it’s stood up pretty well. We've got a method there that clearly works.
“It works at a really high level against good opposition but staying at it for longer and still maintaining our intensity but also backing in our system has been a challenge.”
One player who is setting the standard with his intensity every week is skipper Patrick Cripps, who currently sits atop the AFLCA leaderboard after eight rounds.
Cripps is one of a number of Blues arguably in career-best form, collecting over 30 disposals and at least a goal a game in all of the games he has completed this season.
Voss said it was the captain’s own hard work and driven mindset heading into this season which was the backbone for his current form.
“Since the day I arrived, he was pretty clear on what he wanted to do,” he said.
“He's talked about wanting to make sure he’s a dynamic player in the way that he plays and I think we’re seeing that. What we’re also seeing is a really hungry player who wants to get more out of himself and more out of his team: he’s certainly playing that way.”
