Former basketballer Matt Owies was selected as a Category B rookie in 2018, playing 49 games for the Blues since his debut in 2020.
Playing 18 games in 2023, Owies was a mainstay of the Carlton forward line, with the self-proclaimed ‘pest’ belonging to the elusive ‘mosquito fleet’ – a group of small forwards buzzing around the ball.
Alongside Jesse Motlop, Corey Durdin and Jack Martin, Owies’ strengths lay in his pressure around the ball and his ability to hit the scoreboard, slotting 27 goals for the season.
In what was a much improved season for the 26-year-old, Owies will be looking to build on the strong foundation he lay in 2023 with the likes of Orazio Fantasia coming into the Club to provide experience to the small forwards.
