Carlton defender Simon White and rookie-listed Irishman Ciaran ‘Casey’ Byrne have both inked new two-year deals, which will see them call Ikon Park home until at least the end of 2017.
Since being recruited as a mature-aged rookie in 2010, White has played 59 games in the navy blue, notching up his 50th AFL game in Round 9 this year. It’s a remarkable achievement for the 27-year-old after overcoming a fractured neck in 2013.
In a testament to his character and team-first attitude, the Western Australian was also named Carlton’s Best Club Man at the 2015 John Nicholls Medal.
Meanwhile Byrne, who was recruited from County Louth in Ireland, made an exciting AFL debut in Round 3 v Essendon – just 18 months after he began learning how to play AFL.
After beginning the match as the substitute, the 20-year-old impressed in his first outing gathering nine disposals, one mark and laying a solid tackle.
Carlton’s Head of Football Andrew McKay says White and Byrne have both earned this opportunity.
“We are really delighted Simon and Casey have recommitted to the Blues – both boys are exceptional people who have great character and a tremendous work ethic,” McKay said.
“Simon not only plays a key role for us on the field, but he’s also a teacher and mentor for many of his younger teammates.
“Ciaran has shown he can be a really exciting player for us and it’s a credit to him how quickly he’s picked up the game.
“It was really unfortunate he suffered an injury at training the week after making his debut, but we’re looking forward to seeing his development next year with another full pre-season under his belt.”
