LUKE Power is hoping that all involved in the Navy Blue can see more of the same from Matthew Kennedy after his last fortnight.
Recalled to the team on the back of the bye, Kennedy has been at his combative best in the last two weeks, collecting 27 and 24 disposals respectively.
Placing inside his personal top five for most disposals in a game, Kennedy has benefitted from a stint in the Club’s VFL side where he brought his competitive instincts to the table.
That has translated at AFL level, with Power saying the midfield has “played with an edge” since his return to the senior line-up.
“It’s important that he brings that edge every week he plays the game. It’s his contest which shapes his game and his ability to get after the ball and hunt it, win it cleanly and bring others into the game,” Power told Carlton Coaches’ Corner.
“It’s been great to see him come in during the last two weeks and have a really big impact for us. It’s an absolute credit to him for the way he goes about his football and a great example to young players that when your opportunity comes, you have to be ready.
“It’s really important that he maintains the form he’s showing at the moment.”
Kennedy was one of Carlton’s best when he returned to take on his former side GWS in Round 14, while he was once again a key contributor in the weekend’s return to winning form against Adelaide.
What’s been evident in Kennedy’s game since his return is that he has not only been able to win possession in the contested side of the game, but also have an impact with his spread from the contest.
Largely playing as an inside midfielder with stints on the wing, Power said Kennedy’s running capacity has been a focus for the midfielder in recent seasons.
“His running and his running patterns have come a long way,” he said.
“He’s covering the ground a lot better and that has enabled us - once we brought him in - to play in different positions. He gets out to space and runs really hard, and when he does get involved in our chains, he uses the ball to a really high level.
“We love the fact that he works really hard and hits bodies around the contest.”
