WHEN Carlton met the-then ladder leaders GWS in Round 12, 2017 at the Docklands, the Blues were coming off three successive losses and a badly needed bye.

Clearly this was David v Goliath stuff - and just as David brought down the big bloke in the Valley of Elah, Carlton brought down the Giants on the western side of Wurundjeri Way.

Paradoxically, Carlton big man Matthew Kreuzer in game No.150 earned three Brownlow votes, in a game in which the old dark Navy Blues opened with four goals and effectively held sway until the game’s frenetic end.

With two minutes remaining and scores level in the low-scoring drama, Zac Fisher put Carlton ahead by the narrowest of margins with a hooked kick on the run from 30 metres.

But it was the golden boot of Jacob Weitering that also mattered.

With just six seconds left on the clock, and the footy being furiously pin-balled around the GWS goalmouth, 'Weiters' - then in his second season as a Blue - managed to volley the loose pill 40 metres to the sanctity of the eastern side wing, thereby ensuring a meritorious victory against-all-odds.

For the record, Matthew Wright brought up his 100th career goal in this contest, and David Cuningham earned a Rising Star nomination for his inspired showing, in what doubled as Carlton’s last win over GWS.

It was also the first game in which Liam Jones featured in defence: he was one of seven players who will run out in dark Navy at Giants Stadium tomorrow that also prevailed that day at Marvel Stadium.
