TEN years ago, in the 20th Round match of the 2011 season to be precise, 14 of the 22 Carlton players who took to the field against Melbourne each contributed at least one goal to the team’s 21-goal final tally.
For only the third time in the club’s history did so many put them over the goal umpire’s hat; after Round 10, 1987 and, for the first time, in Round 20, 1980 – and in those two previous encounters it was 20 a side.
In what was an emphatic 76-point thumping of the Redlegs before an audience of more than 40,000, David Ellard with three goals led the spree, to the point that it would be easier to name the eight who didn’t trouble the scorers - Marcus Davies, Nick Duigan, Ryan Houlihan (in his final appearance), Jeremy Laidler, Marc Murphy, Kade Simpson, Zach Tuohy and Chris Yarran.
Chris Judd booted two goals in that contest, and landed the customary three Brownlow votes for his troubles; while the former Melbourne on-baller Brock McLean booted one for the Blues.
A reporter noted that on the back of one of the biggest hidings in footy history, not to mention those notorious “bruise free” remarks bandied around when last they met, Melbourne was never going to struggle for motivation leading in to the Round 20 match.
But for Carlton it was business as usual.
