WHILE it’ll be a new role at the Carlton Football Club for John Worsfold, it will be a continuation of the relationship between himself and David Teague.

It was announced earlier on Thursday that Worsfold would take on a consultancy role at IKON Park, formalising a mentorship he had established with Teague in recent months.

The two had previous experience working alongside one another at two different clubs, with Teague an assistant coach under Worsfold at West Coast while they were both at West Lakes in Worsfold’s short stint at Adelaide following the passing of Phil Walsh.

Speaking to media on Thursday, Teague said that Worsfold had been a sounding board for him since taking on the senior coaching role at Carlton.

“He’s one that I really value his opinion,” Teague said.

“I sat with him a couple of times last year in the hub discussing different ideas… he challenges the way I think.

“We challenge our players to grow and get better. [Worsfold] is someone I’ve gone to: now we’ve been able to formalise it, to help the other coaches as well.”

It’s a full-circle moment for Worsfold, who started his coaching career at IKON Park over 20 years ago after finishing up as a player for West Coast.

Labelling the previous Carlton connection as “a nice little twist to the story”, Teague said that Worsfold was always one who he wanted to get involved after being informed of his desire to stay involved in the football landscape.

“Last year when I spoke to him, he was keen to help all coaches to a certain degree. When I knew that was his mindset when he finished coaching, it was something I wanted to follow up on,” he said.

“We’re in a position now to do that and make it a little more formal and increase the role. I was always keen on him helping me personally and being a sounding board for me.

“Having someone myself and our other coaches can bounce ideas off is really important.”
