AS SOMEONE who has been a favourite amongst Carlton supporters since his arrival a decade ago, Ed Curnow is all too familiar with the impact a crowd can make.

However, even he was taken aback by the "noise factor" in last week's season opener against Richmond.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson, Curnow discussed all things in the wash-up from the Richmond game and looked forward to tomorrow night's clash with the old enemy.

When it came to the crowd, Curnow said their impact was well and truly felt last weekend and he's looking forward to more of the same in Round 2.

“Last Thursday, I don’t think we had much of a crowd compared to Richmond because it was their home game. But it’s our home game this week so I’m looking forward to having a lot more Blues members in the crowd,” he said.

“It was a bit of a shock to be honest with the noise factor so I think 75,000 will be another level.”

While some players may treat a grudge match between two old rivals 'like any other game', Curnow says he’ll use the history of the rivalry to get him pumped up before the first bounce on Thursday night.

It'll be Curnow's 16th match against Collingwood tomorrow night: the equal-most of any team he's played against, alongside Richmond.

“I’ll be using it as motivation to put myself on the edge pre-game. With the crowd and these traditional old Melbourne clubs, the nerves and anxiousness going into a match is aroused a little bit,” he said.

“I’m sure there'll be some tension on Thursday night so I’m looking forward to that.”

Curnow has seen a lot of young players in his time, and was particularly complimentary of youngster Sam Walsh, who has been nothing short of a true professional since he walked through the doors of the Carlton Football Club.

The third-year Walsh gathered a team-high 31 disposals against Richmond, earning him six AFLCA votes for his performance.

“'Walshy' was put in the leadership group in his second year and he hasn’t looked back: he has a great connection to the younger players, to the coaches and he’s just an absolute workhorse and it shows on game day,” he said.

“We couldn’t be more proud of him.”
