A FIRST win of the season will be the focus for the Game Changers tonight.
In the fourth annual Pride game between these two sides, Carlton will be looking to provide four quarters of what they produced in the second half of last week’s season opener.
It’ll be a tough test against the Western Bulldogs, who also showed some promising signs despite a narrow loss in Round 1.
Details: Whitten Oval, Friday 5 February, 7:45pm AEST.
Broadcast: Channel 7 from 7:30pm, womens.afl, SEN 1116, ABC Radio
The game in focus:
It was a similar tale for these two sides last week, with both teams inevitably falling just short under Thursday and Friday night lights.
While Carlton was left to rue a costly second quarter, the Western Bulldogs took the fight to St Kilda with their young pups leading from the front.
The 2021 AFLW Pride Guernsey auction has begun | Start bidding on player-issued guernseys here.
It’ll be an exciting battle of youth when these two sides battle it out, with the likes of Madison Prespakis, Georgia Gee and Grace Egan to go up against fellow under-21 talent in Isabel Huntington, Gabby Newton and Jess Fitzgerald.
The Blues have taken the bragging rights in the last two encounters between these teams, with the Game Changers posting a 21-point win last year after a three-point triumph in 2019.
What to watch:
The Blues showed something close to their best football in the second half last week: the challenge will be backing it up for four quarters.
After a scoreless opening half, the Game Changers throughly outplayed Collingwood in the final two quarters, but left themselves with too big of a job to do.
The Blues’ comeback started at the centre bounce, and Daniel Harford will certainly ask his midfield brigade to get to work once again.
With the absence of Mua Laloifi (concussion), it may be a case of the Blues backing their firepower in at the other end through Tayla Harris, Nicola Stevens and Darcy Vescio.
Blue view:
Can Breann make it a perfect record against twin sister Celine?
The two sisters first came up as opponents in 2019 which saw the Blues triumph, while Carlton’s Moody produced 18 hitouts in the win over the Bulldogs last year.
Now set to go up against her sister once again, Moody knows all too well what she’s about to come up against.
“Celine’s tall, likes to jump, very similar to how I play. It’s good but also a weakness because it means she knows how I’m going to play,” Moody told Sarah Burt.
“I’m sure we will get some arm wrestling going and probably a couple of elbows in the ribs on the ground as well.”
