“‘TEAGUEY’ said for me to be pretty adjustable with where I’m playing.”
With his 16th pre-season well and truly underway, Marc Murphy is forecasting a change in role ahead of the 2021 home-and-away year.
Following the departures of fellow veterans Kade Simpson and Matthew Kreuzer, Murphy is approaching the year on the verge of 300 games and behind only Eddie Betts as the most senior player at Ikon Park.
There’s still plenty of run left in Murphy’s legs according to the man himself, who didn’t miss a game in 2020.
Having spent so much time at the centre bounce, Murphy is expecting to spend more time on the outside as Carlton’s younger midfielders assume the on-ball responsibility.
“I’ll be playing probably [a combination of] half forward, wing and on-ball,” Murphy said, responding to fan questions from social media.
“No doubt I’ll be up on the wing at some point. I think my knowledge of football is pretty good so I can play all sorts of roles.
“I’m obviously at the back-end of my career and really enjoying my time here at the footy club, there’s plenty of good energy.”
While saying that his fellow teammates are “keeping him young”, Murphy - who announced earlier this week with wife Jessie that they’re expecting a second child in July - echoed CEO Cain Liddle’s sentiments on radio earlier this week.
There's plenty to take out of this.

CEO Cain Liddle spoke this morning about our 2021 ambitions on-field, Patrick Cripps, this weekend's John Nicholls Medal and much more.
Suggesting that Carlton was now in a “sweet spot” when it came to its list demographic, Murphy said the time was now to turn training standards into results.
“We’re not a young side anymore,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of guys who have played 50-150 games and I think we’re finding we’re in the sweet spot of guys who are mature physically and have played a lot of footy.
“Last year, we were in a lot of games and we cost ourselves with switching off at times. That’s the next step for us, to mentally know you can’t always be at your best in-game bu you can’t allow 4-5 goal blowouts which cost us last year.
“There were a lot of lessons learned and I’m looking forward to seeing how the guys respond this year, I’m sure we will.”
