IT WILL be a powerhouse carpool when the Prespakis, Egan and Harris household arrive for next week’s AFLW season opener.
With the action from the track dinner table conversation for the trio, league MVP Maddy Prespakis is looking forward to the rapidly approaching day she can link up with her housemates on the field.
Appearing on The Boundary AFLW Podcast, Prespakis previewed a new-look Blues outfit ahead of AFLW 5.0.
“We actually spoke about it not too long ago after we did a bit of match simulation at training when Grace and I were in the midfield then we’d kick it down to Tayla,” Prespakis said.
“You do think about it a little bit because we’re all just living in the same house, but we do joke about it: I’m keeping everyone afloat in the house so that’s good."
With six new inclusions during the off-season – with Elise O’Dea, Maddy Guerin and Charlotte Hammans arriving via trades and Mimi Hill, Daisy Walker and Winnie Laing through the draft – there will be plenty of Blues making a case for Round 1 selection.
“We’ve picked up a few younger girls in the draft that will come through as midfielders and we traded in a few girls that will also probably float through that role,” she said.
“Obviously Elise O’Dea adds that bit of grunt around the ball, but then you’ve also got players like Mimi Hill: she’s come in as an under-18s girl that’s definitely pushing for selection.
"Everyone’s just got to step up, play the role that they’ve always been playing and I think the final result takes care of itself and gives another young girl an opportunity to come through and earn her stripes.”
Among the new faces at Ikon Park also comes the big improvers ahead of the 2021 season, with Abbie McKay a standout for Prespakis in the final weeks of pre-season.
“Abbie McKay has come a long way since the end of last season: she’s worked super hard in that off period and is looking one of our best,” she said of the third-year Blue.
“She’s really earnt her stripes and she’s just done a mountain of work in her running, so I’m excited to see what she can do this season.
“I think she’ll definitely be in that Round 1 mix.”
