IN HER second year as a Blue, Serena Gibbs is looking forward to getting some experience and developing her game at the Carlton Football Club.
As the AFLW pre-season kicks off, Gibbs is still reeling at being at Ikon Park, working hard at every opportunity that comes her way.
“It’s so good to be back with the girls, it’s something I’ve wanted all year, just having everyone in the same spot, not via zoom or anything is just amazing,” Gibbs said.
“I can’t believe my life changed overnight and to be walking into Ikon Park every week is quite amazing and it’s just so surreal still to this day.”
Coming from a netball background, the 20 year old has had to work hard to develop her football skills, with solid gym work being another learning curve.
“I didn’t have much experience playing football prior to being drafted, I was a netballer for a long time, so for me game development and skill acquisition is quite up there in terms of goals,” she said.
“I’ve never really been in the gym either so jumping in with all the [strength and conditioning] team has been pretty great and I’ve actually grown some muscle which I’m happy about.”
With a new crop of draftees coming through, Gibbs is no longer the new kid in town and is looking forward to passing on her knowledge from the past year.
“It’s quite crazy not being a new face, but I’m just trying to welcome those girls just like how the Club welcomed me the year beforehand,” she said.
“I know that’s exactly what I loved when I joined and just to be able to pass that on is amazing.”
As the 2021 season quickly approaches, the key tall is aiming to put her best foot forward and continue to work hard behind the scenes and hopefully get to play her first senior game.
“Into pre-season, it’s just hitting the track and getting out there every session, just making sure everything’s moving well and no injuries fingers crossed,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to the 2021 season and hopefully getting a game, that would be amazing but it’s just those little things behind the scenes that I’m wanting to tick off so that I can get that one game.”
