OVERVIEW

Missing only one game in 2020, Will Setterfield solidified his place as a starter in Carlton's on-ball brigade.

In his second year in Navy Blue, Setterfield took advantage of an injury-clear pre-season - his first in the AFL system - to take his game to the next level as one of the Blues’ key impactors at the centre bounce.

The gradual faith in Setterfield went into overdrive in Round 5, where the youngster recorded 14 centre bounce attendances in an impressive display against the Western Bulldogs. From there, he didn't look back.

The transition from a winger to an inside midfielder has seen the former Giant prove his wares which he showcased at junior level, ranking second at Carlton for tackles (11th in the AFL) and third at the Club for clearances.

BEST PERFORMANCE

A consistent performer throughout the year, Setterfield delivered his best performance against North Melbourne in the Round 8 victory.

The midfielder was tireless in the seven-point win, with his efforts through the centre exemplified in his 20 disposals (12 contested) for the afternoon at the Gabba.

Among Carlton’s top ball-winners for the afternoon, the young Blue also brought elite pressure in the contest: his six tackles and six clearances contributed to a well-earned four points in Carlton's fourth win in six games.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

Showing he has much more to offer than just crafty work at the centre bounce, Setterfield proved himself a valuable avenue to goal in the Blues Round 5 clash with St Kilda.

On the hunt in the third quarter, Carlton has plenty of work to do to catch up with St Kilda with a quick pile on of goals needed in order to compete.

Setterfield wasted no time in producing two crafty goals when the Blues’ needed it most at Marvel Stadium, with the youngster earmarking his work in front of goal as a key driver for the 2021 season.

THEY SAID IT

Setting out in pre-season to ease the burden on star teammate Patrick Cripps, Setterfield singled out the co-captain's influence when it came to the youngster's improvement.

"'Crippa' has been huge, he has taught me a lot in terms of building my midfield game and stoppage craft," Setterfield said.

"Especially around stoppages, he's the best in the business. I've loved every minute of working with him.

“A lot of other mids like Ed Curnow and ‘Murph’, they’re all part of our group at the Club where we’re working as a tight-knit group and trying to build each other up.”
