This weekend, Carlton legend Syd Jackson will be recognised with a special presentation during the Fremantle v Sydney Swans game on, Saturday August 22 at Optus Stadium.

The presentation is a formal recognition of Jackson’s contribution to the AFL and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with a tribute boomerang made from Wathaurong Glass being presented to Jackson by AFL Commission Chairman Richard Goyder AO.

Jackson won two premierships with Carlton where he wore the famous No.5 Navy Blue guernsey into 136 senior matches between 1969 and 1976, including two premierships in 1970 and 1972.

Jackson was known for his dynamic playing style on the field and it wasn’t long until his silky skills, lightning pace and hard edge saw him become a Carlton fan favourite.

A Perth native, Jackson is now a member of the East Perth team of the century, where he won the East Perth Best and Fairest medal in 1966, was named in the Indigenous Team of the century, and a member of the WA Hall of Fame.

Since retiring Syd has worked tirelessly to create more opportunities for Indigenous Australians – with his work with young Indigenous Australians doing much to pave the way for future stars of the game.

Jackson will be the third player to be honoured during the Sir Doug Nicholls Round for his contributions to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, alongside Michael Long and Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer.
