The Carlton Football Club has significantly boosted its playing list, welcoming star midfielder Elise O’Dea and speedster Maddy Guerin to the Club on two-year deals after completing a trade with Melbourne today.
O’Dea and Guerin arrive at Ikon Park in exchange for the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft.
An elite midfielder of the competition, O’Dea has played all 28 games for the Demons since being recruited from the Darebin Falcons in 2017.
The two-time All Australian is a supreme ball-winner who averages more than 17 disposals a game and possess terrific leadership, as showcased when she was made co-captain of Melbourne for the 2019 season.
Her maturity and leadership makes O’Dea the perfect addition to what is currently an exciting midfield group, consisting of reigning AFLW MVP Madison Prespakis and last year’s first-round selections Lucy McEvoy and Grace Egan.
Guerin played six games for the Demons since being selected with the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NAB AFLW draft following an impressive junior career with the Northern Knights.
The 20-year-old is also a talented athlete who has competed at state level in the 100-metre sprint, long jump and triple jump.
Carlton GM of Women’s Football Ash Brown said the Club was delighted to have both O’Dea and Guerin wearing navy blue next season.
“By using pick No.15 and retaining pick No.12 (No.7 in Victorian region) we’ve been able to bring in two ready-made players who we really think will make an impact for us over the coming years,” Brown said.
“Elise has proven to be one of the premiere midfielders in the competition over an extended period of time so to have her nominate and ultimately join our football club is very exciting for our members and supporters.
“At 28 years of age and with experience as a co-captain, Elise will provide terrific leadership for us in the middle of the ground, where we already have some exciting young talent.
“Maddy is also a talented player and we are looking forward to seeing that on full display in navy blue next season.
“She is a speedy utility capable of playing multiple positions and will be a really exciting addition to the side for our members and supporters.
“We could not be happier that Elise and Maddy will be wearing navy blue next season and look forward to both of them being a key part of our pursuit of success in 2021 and beyond.”
